Half-time substitute Grimes netted in the 89th minute to seal a first home win in League Two since early September for the Spireites, who were without banned manager Paul Cook.
Assistant manager Danny Webb was keen to praise his side for a "well-overdue" clean sheet.
Webb said: "It was very well earned today, not just for the backline and the goalie, but the whole team. It wasn't pretty at times, I don't think the conditions helped either team.
"I thought we were quite solid and in control, without being disrespectful to Barrow because they carry threats, like most teams do in this league.
"When we did score I felt we would see the game out, 0-0 at home would have been very disappointing.
"To get that late winner and get back in the play-offs, it's a really good day. After two poor performances and poor results it was important you win by hook or by crook, and the boys found that way to win today."
