A WIDE EXPANSE OF TREES ensures there’s lush greenery as far as my eyes can see. In the midst of green canopies and the thicket of bushes, there’s a cemented pathway, where I sight a battery-operated buggy moving towards me at a leisurely pace. Its languid movement is an indication of how my days are going to be at Jetwing Vil Uyana, a luxurious sanctuary located in Sigiriya in the northern Matale district of Sri Lanka. Known for its most popular attraction, the Lion Rock fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is a popular destination and Vil Uyana is just a stone’s throw from Lion Rock.
A quick glance further reveals verdant paddy fields, marshes within a sprawling private nature reserve and different types of accommodation camouflaged for privacy. The cacophony of the birds welcomes me to their abode and as if on cue a peacock takes flight and perches on a tree. Its vivid colours stand out like a reminder that there’s nothing more beautiful than nature. A few grey langurs swinging on the trees pause for a moment to inspect the new arrival to their habitat.
