Lovely Lincolnshire

Stand on the ramparts of Lincoln's grand Norman castle and it's easy to see why this hilltop fortress has played a key role in city life across the centuries.

In every direction, I can see over rooftops and spires to the surrounding countryside. No medieval marauder would arrive here unannounced. And just a short walk away across Castle Hill, the towers of Lincoln Cathedral dominate the skyline.

Lincolnshire's county town is packed with historic

buildings, quaint corners and stirring stories, but it's also a great destination for anyone who loves retail therapy, restaurants, and riverside rambles. I combined Lincoln with nearby Stamford for a precious short break with my pregnant daughter.

Starting in Lincoln, we headed for the Norman castle, unusual for having two keeps, and a complete curtain wall restored for an anniversary in 2015. Walk the whole circuit for those panoramic views.
