THE POWER OF PETS There are multiple benefits to having a pet, says Luke Mangion, veterinary surgeon with More Than (www.morethan. com/pet-insurance/). "Our research found that nine out of 10 owners report a positive impact."
SHUTTERSTOCKREHOMING RULES
"There's a pet for every home - it's just a matter of finding the right one for you," says Lucie Berridge, Rehoming and Relations Manager at Woodgreen Pets Charity (www.woodgreen.org.uk/find-a rescue-pet-from-wood-green).
Consider your lifestyle, home and financial situation. A dog requires daily exercise and interaction, while cats are generally more independent. "Visit a reputable rehoming centre that offers vet/health checks," advises Luke. "Not only will you get a stamp of approval, but every effort is made to match the pet to the most appropriate owner."
Social media platforms are far riskier, he explains. If you choose this route, ensure you are provided with a medical history, including vaccinations. If it's a puppy, see the mother. Good owners will ask questions of you to try and ensure you will provide a good home. Red flags are those who can't provide any history and seem only interested in the sale.
Consider giving an older dog a home. They're more likely to be trained and tend to settle in more easily.

DOGS CAN HELP YOU MAKE FRIENDS
"A beneficial side effect of owners getting out in the fresh air walking their dogs is they meet like-minded people," says Luke. "Walking familiar routes means they meet, and even initiate a conversation with, other dog walkers." Justin agrees, saying, "Pets can serve as a conversation starter. This increases social interaction and helps people make new friends."
