A friend moving away, failing an exam, not being invited to a party, discrimination in your peer group, your favourite restaurant shutting down, losing a tennis match, not getting into the course of your choice and more. You may have felt sad at all these times, but you were possibly able to snap out of it. Maybe you also did something to help you feel better.
And then there are some mornings when you realize that you don’t feel up to doing anything productive. You want to silence the alarm, snuggle up under the sheet, and not see the sunshine at all. You think waking up means going through yet another annoying day full of unfinished business that seems too vexing to confront. You know for sure that this is not what you should be doing but this is what you felt like doing and quite possible it is what you do. We’re allowed to be lazy, demotivated, lethargic, inactive, and even despondent from time-to-time. But if these feelings can’t be brushed off, they can become enduring, and just stick with you.
