The last couple of months have seen the most powerful earthquake to hit Italy since 1980, a 6.6 magnitude quake which rocked Central and Southern Italy.

Buildings throughout the country had already suffered damage due to previous, smaller quakes and, indeed, in Arquata del Tronto (which I mentioned previously in my editor’s letter in the August/September issue of IFB) the town was again brutalized after the earthquake of the 24 August.

The developing relationship between technology and fire- fighting is something that has really caught my eye this issue. In the news, we’re increasingly seeing the important role technology plays in active and passive fire-fighting, and it’s growing daily. More money is being ploughed into this area and as we see the development of drone technology, we’re finding a new tool in the fire- fighters arsenal.
