When did you last hear an industry leader stand up to the
government? Rahul Bajaj recently lived up to his reputation as a
perennial anti-establishment industry leader when he suggested
before Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his colleagues
Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal that the government
didnât really appreciate criticism. Shah responded to the barb at
the event. Sitharaman later presented an elaborate defence of the
government.
Some issues that have exercises the industry leaders in the recent
past include tax terrorism. But is there an atmosphere of fear in
the country where people are afraid to speak out? We beg to differ.
Having said that, itâs time that the government engaged with industry and addressed
their concerns. The government can very well argue that the Finance Minister has been
routinely holding confabulations with the industry representatives across the country.
Probably more needs to be done.
This adds to the pressure on the government which is already preoccupied with fighting
a slowdown that appears to be getting worse every quarter.
