Our writers in this issue, share different perspectives. Is it better to travel as a pilgrim rather than as a tourist. Do we take or do we give as we travel? Women and Nature have been undervalued by a patriarchal world. So too the eco-feminine as a principle - as can be seen in the way poetry, the arts, natural resources, softness and nurturance, the small and the simple have all been under-recognised and under-valued in the masculine world of politics, technology and economics of endless growth. We explore this theme through stories and essays - as it so happens, mostly by women.

Countries around the world have adopted political systems that have been centralising control of basics like food and water. But where governments have failed we find projects that have localised control and responsibility have succeeded. In this issue, we present information on innovative water solutions as well as stories where people have taken charge of their water needs.

We are experiencing gradual but sure transitions of our civilization towards an ecologically aware and socially just way of living. It seems to be a trickle now - but all movements start small; Eternal Bhoomi in this issue presents some perspectives and stories of transition.

In Sanskrit, the word Yugaantar means the tough transition period between two historical ages. This issue is about launching a resource hub - a way to share thoughts and stories on ecological living with our youth and educators in this period of transition to an ecological era.

A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation. What’s a Good Life?
Individually, we may ‘seek happiness’ in a range of directions, but collectively most of the developed / developing world looks for a host of material comforts to lead a good life. Often, we may be unaware of the connection between the good life we aspire for, and the ecological repercussions of our choices – climate change, peak oil, increasing pollution levels, food packed with unnatural chemicals, etc. Even those of us who understand these connections find it difficult to give up the good life ‘goodies’ to which we are accustomed. Why? Where is this quest for a good life leading us?

We need to step away from looking at Education as a ‘Public Good’ as mainstream economists call it, which makes it a product or a service delivered by schools to children. We need instead to look at schools and
colleges as ecosystems – connected with other ecosystems / communities around us.
