Women in Peril

Our cover story this week brings out the horrid facts about growing violence against women in Andhra Pradesh. The state stands first in sexual harassment cases in the entire country. AP has also acquired the notoriety of standing second in Dowry harassment cases.

About 80% of women facing domestic violence in Hyderabad are educated and naturally they are coming forward to file complaints with the police and family courts. Even the women from politically powerful families have fallen prey to domestic violence and lost their lives.

Wayward young men confuse passion with love under the influence of Cinema and TV soap operas. These bad influences are turning youth into axe- murderers. They cut, slash and pour acid over college-going girls and in the process kill or maim these hapless girl-students.

The Police respond with instant solutions like encounters. But these police actions fail to deter other young men into repeating the crimes against women. Society should find lasting solutions to these growing problems.

Special Report: Pakistan nourishes Khalistani vampire

There are ominous signals that Pakistan is trying to revive Khalistani extremism. The main protogonists of this new extremism, Jagtar Singh Tara and Wadhawa Singh Babbar, the head of Babbar Khalsa, both live in Pakistan, which also gives them financial and logistical support. Though they are yet to gain strength to do damage to India, there is no room for complacency. As with vampires, you have to drive a stake through their heart while they are still sleeping. Indian Government should send a strong warning to Khalistani sponsor.

Chandrababu Naidu\'s service mantra

Seldom have political parties promoted the concept of giving back to society and organize similar welfare activities which has helped sensitize both its members as well as other supporters. But Chandrababu is doing it through NTR Trust . The Swara Veda to be organised this month is the latest example.
