This latest issue of QUEST comes combine of the last two issue with theme "Handloom & Handicrafts of North East India : Change and Continuity".

Indian handloom and handicraft products, like that of many other regions of the world, reflect the cultural, spiritual, religious, and aesthetic sensibilities of the country.

In the Northeast of India, myriad communities produce their own hand-crafted objects either for daily use or for ceremonial occasions. The distinctive patterns and motifs have begun to earn wide appreciation for not only the finished products but also for the eco-friendly materials and processes which create them.

The handloom and handicraft items, different as they could be in manifestation, however, have a deeper meaning. Most of them draw inspiration from Mother Nature and not just from the animate and inanimate objects, but also from elements connected with their faiths and beliefs. Symbolic representations are synonymous with many forms of handloom and handicrafts. The famed Brindabani Bastra connected with Srimanta Sankardeva has significance that is no less than that of the object itself. There are numerous instances
which have levels of meaning that can only be construed with very fine sensibilities.

From time immemorial the handloom and handicraft items have wonderfully showcased not just invaluable knowledge and practices of the indigenous communities. They are the revealing examples of their cultural ethos, their emotional wellspring, and a rare blend of innovation and ingenuity. In Sister Nivedita's word, The highest art is always charged with spiritual intensity, with intellectual and emotional revelation, an expression that could be easily applied to the handloom and handicraft heritage of this part of India.

"Cultural Tourism : Focus Northeast India" is the theme for the QUEST Volume VIII, No. 2 of January 2015.

In today's age of globalization, tourism is one of the world's largest service industries, contributing in multiple ways, strengthening the inter-connected processes, and yielding sizeable benefits to the economy of a region. Among vibrant facets of the various new emerging arenas of tourism, cultural tourism is gaining more prominence over the years. Cultural tourism with its strong focus on experiencing cultural environments, including landscapes, the material and performing arts, and lifestyles of the indigenous people, their values and traditions, as well as other manifestations of creative inter-cultural exchange processes can attract tourists from across the world. This facet of tourism could synchronize well with the exotic environment of Northeast India.

This region of India is indeed an example of 'paradise unexplored’ encompassing a unique and rich biodiversity, its thick rain-fed forests, major rivers, diverse ethnicity with their varied customs and traditions, food habits, way of life, etc. Inhabited by more than 230 different tribes, each State in the region is endowed with its own distinct features engulfing all aspects of tourist attractions, and can thus offer huge potential for tourism development. The lofty Himalayas, Brahmaputra, Bihu, Loktak lake, the megaliths, the Morungs, the Hornbill festival, Ras Lila, and many more embodiments of other festivals of the region are examples of it's richness worth showcasing and exploring.

This issue of Quest is an effort to bring into focus cultural tourism prospets and challenges in the region, and to explore a meaningful involvement of the Northeast in India's Look East Policy.

Each person has to cope with the physical, social and magico-religious environment for his or her survival. To fulfill the needs of food, shelter one has to work with clockwork precision. Due to the strenuous work throughout the year life of human beings become insipid. Therefore, to regain the vigour and inclination in life each society of the world celebrates some festivals in different times of the year. Therefore, it can be said that festivals are indispensable part of human life.

Northeast India is the meeting point of a number of communities, both tribal and non-tribal, having their pristine languages, ethos, mores, culture and ethnic affiliations. Almost all the communities of Northeast India have their stories of migration depicting their arrival from far and near and permanently settling in this part of India. In hills the people principally practice Jhumming, while in fertile valleys they practice permanent cultivation. Exceptions are there like the terrace cultivation of the Angamis of Nagaland and Apatanis of Arunachal Pradesh. These people observe a good number of festivals integral to their principal economy and the traditional faiths. Hills- plains relation of Northeast India is a common feature and due to this unavoidable relation some of the festivals are observed in some places enveloping both the populations of hills and plains. A clear example is the Jonbeel Mela of Morigaon area of Assam where the Tiwas, Karbis, Khasis, Pnars and the Assamese people irrespective of caste and creed assemble expressing symbol of peace, pleasure and integrity. 

This issue of Quest is an effort towards gaining a deeper understanding of traditional festivals in their varied and fascinating forms, and how they share many unifying elements.

It is an irony of our times that we appear to have missed out on
the teachings of Swami Vivekananda in a strife torn part of the
nation, which in fact shares strong ties with the rest of India.

With the overt and covert designs of vested interests, a situation
is being created in which tangible and imaginary differences are
being promoted with disastrous results. The time has come for a
good hard look at the commonalities we share, rather than the
differences which insidiously build distrust.

This issue’s theme about Swamiji’s message and its relevance
for North East India would find a resonance in the areas of youth
affairs and education. The region lags behind in educational
opportunities as well as in economic avenues available to the youth.
The call of Swami Vivekananda for the youth to be robust and
resolute is certainly valid in a region that is beset with distrust and
conflict. His unifying concept is much needed in a society that is
today undermined by divisive forces.

Likewise his vision of education too has pertinence for the
people, particularly the youth of the region that has witnessed a
long period of conflict. His expansive and inclusive vision of
education could well be the panacea for the young women and men
of the region who seek opportunities of growth and fulfillment.
Perhaps more importantly, it will articulate his vision for an
enriching life which embraces all things positive.

This issue of Quest is a continuum of our efforts to celebrate
Swami Vivekananda’s 150th Birth Anniversary and is a humble
tribute to his hallowed memory.
