Rock ‘n’ Roll in the Open Air
On 20 and 21 July the “Gatchina” Museum-Reserve is staging a “Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend”. A series of concerts in outside venues in Gatchina Park will highlight the musical culture of the 1950s and 1960s and rock ‘n’ roll as a phenomenon. The concerts will take place by the Birch House, by the Admiralty Gate, by the Turkish Marquee and in the Amphitheatre. The “Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend” is a development of the museum-reserve’s “Weekends in Gatchina Park”, a project that has already included three “Jazz Weekends”.

Mini-Films
The Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art invites you to an exhibition of the 46th issue of the legendary Pirelli calendar, which features the work of Albert Watson. “Dreaming” is more a cinematic project than a photographic one. The four series are four “mini-films” about women who have their own idea of happiness and are heading for their cherished dream by their own route. Gigi Hadid, who has recently split up with her loved one, has shut herself up in a glass tower of solitude. Julia Garner plays a girl photographer who dreams of recognition. Misty Copeland, whose partner was acted by Calvin Royal III, has tried on for size the life of a ballerina, full of dreams of great fame, while Laetitia Casta is transformed into an artist living in a loft with her boyfriend.

Antidepressant Musical
Don’t miss this! On 10 December the Lensoviet Palace of Culture will be the venue for the first musical based on “Flea Market” — Billy’s Band’s most enigmatic, conceptual album. One dank, mist morning the main character meets a girl at a flea market and loses his head over her. From that moment, the past and present merge into a tangled mass and his life begins to resemble clips from old newsreels. The tragicomic story will be performed in the best traditions of dark cabaret: original choreography, garish costumes by Polina Raudson and live music by Billy’s Band. This ironic musical is just the cure for autumn depression.

The Most Important Songs
The line-up of the group A-ha has remained unchanged since 1982 — singer Morten Harket, keyboard player Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy. On 20 November the trio will appear at the Ice Palace as part of a tour devoted to their first album “Hunting High and Low”. Those ten songs included everything with which the Norwegian debutants subsequently conquered the world. They feature touching romance, outstanding melodiousness and precise vocals. Several decades later this music still sounds like a reflection of an age and the beginning of A-ha’s career. All the songs from “Hunting High and Low” will be performed in order at the Ice Palace.

A Sweet Sculptress
The Arts Square Gallery is staging the first individual exhibition in Russia by the world-famous French artist and sculptor Laurence Jenkell, entitled “Sweet Memories”. Almost all her works are “sweets” of various colours and sizes made of bronze, acrylic glass, aluminium and marble or are representations of them. Using her trademark “twisting technique”, Jenkell creates bright sculptures like sweets and is sometimes even called a “sweet sculptress”. According to the artist, sculpture in the form of sweets is the only type of art that involves all the senses — sight, hearing with the idea of the crackling of paper, taste and smell. In her opinion, sweets contain all human values, individual past and general memory.

A Fairytale for Adults
The Musical Comedy Theatre invites you to the final performances of the musical “Dance of the Vampires”. This fairytale for adults about a vampirologist professor and his pupil who come across a vampire’s castle in the depths of the Alps has been a great hit with audiences in the two capitals. The unique atmosphere, sensual Gothic scenery, enchanting music and incomparable characters have guaranteed the production several seasons of packed houses. A further 48 performances will be given between 11 June and 21 July, so everyone will have the chance to meet their favourite characters and actors. The permanent conductor of the musical Alexey Nefyodov will be on the podium.

The Kingdom of Fountains
While on the subject of Peterhof we must not forget the spring festival of the switching-on of the fountains, which will be held this year on 18 May at the Grand Cascade in the Lower Park. The colourful show will be a combination of multimedia technology and a spectacular dramatized event. By tradition the celebration will conclude with a firework display above the Grand Peterhof Palace.

A Musical Freethinker
Cameron Carpenter, the first organist to be nominated for a Grammy award, is coming to Russia with the world’s only personal concert organ. The American organist and composer is renowned for his virtuoso technique, his orchestral arrangements for organ and his extravagant appearance. His repertoire extends far beyond traditional frameworks: besides classical and contemporary music, he plays pieces which nobody had previously thought of performing on the organ — for example, Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltz”, Medtner’s “Fairytales” and Chopin’s Etudes Op. 10 as edited by Godovsky. Carpenter improvises easily and naturally in folk, jazz, soul, disco and pop music. 17 April. Philharmonic Great Hall.

Living Nature
The “S.P.A.S.” Gallery is staging a “fabulously luminiferous” exhibition of still life paintings by Elena Likhatskaya. The colour in her works is, at the same time, simple and complex, decorative and luminiferous. She depicts ordinary objects as living characters, creating an endlessly mobile habitat in which things come to life and function. With the power of her fantasy Likhatskaya transforms them into actors in her wonderful “naïve” theatre. Elena highlights the most important aspects, discarding superfluous details. Cups, teapots and vases take on sweet, amusing characters, while toys and porcelain statuettes introduce melancholy nostalgic notes. 2—30 Mar. 

Monarch of Painting
The Piero della Francesca monographic exhibition in the Hermitage is a rare opportunity for people to acquaint themselves with this artist’s oeuvre, as there are no works by Piero della Francesca in Russian museum collections. Nowadays there is great interest in Piero della Francesca and the artist himself is seen as a key figure in the Italian Quattrocento. Piero’s art is devoid of heightened emotionality and dynamism. It exemplifies the main principle of the Renaissance: the human being, full of beauty and dignity, is the centre of the universe and the surrounding world is harmonious. 

A Labyrinth of the Grotesque
Would you like to know how the eerie, fantastic ideas of Bosch, Arcimboldo and Goya took root in 20th century art? Then head for the Museum of 20th and 21st Century St. Petersburg Art which is staging the exhibition “A Radical Turnover. Grotesque in Art”. The whole museum, including the stairs, the inner courtyard and the adjoining territory, has been “occupied” by paradoxical and challenging works by artists offering their own concept of what is grotesque in art.

Puppet Experiments
Try to catch the exhibition “In Principal Roles. ‘Soyuzmultfilm’ Puppet Experiments” at the Bulthaup Design Gallery and the NAMEGALLERY before 9 December. You will meet Cheburashka, Crocodile Gena, the Boa Constrictor, the Marmoset, the Baby Elephant, the Parrot and other famous characters from the legendary studio’s puppet films. The exhibition plunges viewers into the world of puppet animation with its own rules and exceptions, enabling them to meet their favourite characters face to face.

First Time in Russia
The legendary Blue Man Group is bringing its incredible show to Russia for the first time. The Blue Man Group consists of three guys with blue shaved heads. They are different, but are not aliens; they can make people laugh, but are not clowns; they are silent, but are not mimes. They draw the audience into an unforgettable mutual experience. 20—25 November.

A Cabaret Atmosphere
On 26, 27 and 28 October the Musical Comedy Theatre is staging the premiere of a production of the musical “Can-Can” by the famous American composer Cole Porter. The action takes place in Montmartre, the heart of bohemian Paris. La Môme Pistache, the owner of the small “Bal du Paradis” café, entertains the public every evening with a scandalous dance prohibited by the law on morality — the can-can. This does not please the young ambitious judge Aristide Forestier and he threatens to close Mademoiselle Pistache’s establishment if she continues to break the law… For full immersion in the atmosphere of a French cabaret part of the action will take place in the auditorium, so every theatregoer will feel like a direct participant in the production and a customer of “Bal du Paradis”.

A Celebration of Life
The Music Hall invites you to the premiere of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”. Written in eleven days, the opera buffa is one of the composer’s most successful and popular works. Producer-director Hans-Joachim Frey has moved the action in the comedy to Rome in the 1960s, with romantic scenery in the spirit of Federico Fellini’s famous films. For full immersion in this sunny atmosphere set designer Pyotr Okunev and video designer Vadim Dulenko use a spectacular original video sequence. The costumes by the St. Petersburg designer Elena Badmaeva give the production a special charm and a bohemian element. The light-hearted plot, subtle humour, comic situations and changes of dress will give theatregoers a real celebration of life.

It’ll be Great
Roger Waters will be appearing at the “St. Petersburg” Sports and Concert Complex on 29 August as part of the “Us + Them” world tour. This is what he has to say about the concert: “We set off on this tour with a new show. It will be a selection of songs from my whole career in music — compositions from the Pink Floyd days and several new songs. The percentage may be 80/20 in favour of old material, but all the songs will be linked by a basic theme. I promise it’ll be as great as it used to be”. Roger Waters’ concerts are always striking by their minute attention to detail in the visual and sound concept, and the “Us + Them” tour is no exception. It will be total immersion in a rock show for the audience.

The Music of Millions
A musical championship will be held at the Ice Palace on 12 July. The competitors will include Zemfira, Alai Oli, Mujuice and other well-known performers whose names are being kept secret for the time being. After several years of silence Zemfira is returning to St. Petersburg with a set of her best songs. Her rare concerts are always events which fill stadia and bring together a great variety of people. She approaches each performance responsibly and scrupulously — perfect sound, lighting, stage design and astonishing energy. Alai Oli is an outstanding example of an independent group whose popularity cannot be measured in figures and ratings.

Encore for an Anniversary
Last November the legendary group Nautilus Pompilius celebrated its 35th anniversary with a sell-out concert in St. Petersburg . The rapturous reception of the anniversary concert led to numerous requests to repeat it. For those who want to experience it again and for those who missed the event for one reason or another Vyacheslav Butusov is preparing an encore of “Goodbye America!”. The audience can expect stunning, occasionally hypnotic stage design and a video sequence consisting of archive recordings of concerts, in addition to the familiar songs in a modern original interpretation. 21 June at the Oktyabrsky Concert Hall.

Perfect Dissonances
The Erarta Museum, in conjunction with the Dance Open ballet festival, is staging an exhibition by the controversial Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf entitled “Harmony of Dissonances. Mania of Perfection”. Erwin Olaf knows exactly what he wants to say to the viewer with each frame. And to bring this idea to fruition he first chooses a model and then transforms her, revealing his secret artistic concept and laying bare every nerve, every vibration of the soul. The display features photographs which are the result of the creative union between the master and a unique model — the Netherlands National Ballet. The focus of attention is the dancer’s body, brought by supernatural exertions and high emotional tension to both perfection and devastation. Until 21 May.

Guitar Magic
The 6th “Magic of the Guitar” International Festival will be held in the Northern Capital from 6 to 13 April and the programme will be full of surprises. The guitar will be seen in a totally different light in the opening concert at the Philharmonic Chamber Hall on 6 April. The combination of its magical timbre with the violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, cello and double bass creates a truly enchanting sound. The concert on 10 April in the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace will feature real queens of classical guitar: Antigoni Goni and Irina Kulikova. The closing concert on 13 April will include, for the first time in St. Petersburg, three concertos for guitar and orchestra in one evening.

Magic and Shamanism
The legendary “Akvarium” and its leader Boris Grebenshchikov occupy a special place in the history of Russian rock: from the early 1980s their music has had an enormous influence on the consciousness of at least three generations, acting as one of the heralds of global changes in society. Grebenshchikov is known as an outstanding musician and songwriter, but he is also an artist, writer, translator and expert on Oriental philosophy. While experimenting with various musical styles and genres, Boris Grebenshchikov has always been true to himself: his albums are at a level of professionalism that is unattainable to many. Each performance of his group is more than just music — it is magic, shamanism... 

Three Violin Solos
The Music Hall, Goran Bregović & the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra and the “Northern Symphony” Orchestra invite you to the musical-historical project “Three Letters from Sarajevo” on 9 and 10 February. Three violin solos will be performed in three styles: classical as played by Christians, eastern as played by Muslims and Klezmer as played by Jews. This is what Bregović has to say about his work: “In this project I am attempting to switch from history to emotions, from emotions to joy, from sadness to dances”.

A Megastar
The inimitable South Korean classical pianist and composer Yiruma (Lee Ru-Ma) will give a concert in the Philharmonic Great Hall on 17 January. The musician, who was born in Seoul, received his musical education in Britain. Immediately after graduating Yiruma released several albums, and critics and music lovers started talking about him as a megastar. The secret of his success is in his music — ordinary listeners say Yiruma’s music is wonderful, while professionals tip their hats to him and declare without a shadow of a doubt that as soon as he touches the keyboard “it seems that angels are talking to you”.

Nymphs and their Creator
The “Molbert” Gallery and Diego Blanco, a photographer from Majorca, have brightened up the cold and gloomy days of December with a gift for St. Petersburg’s residents and visitors that is full of light, beauty and elegance: the “Floating Women” photography project. From 1 to 10 December you can “plunge” into the Mediterranean with beautiful nymphs, be “soaked” in seawater and sunlight, familiarize yourself with the aesthetics of underwater photography and listen to musical fantasies on the landscape by the “Babel” group. On 2 December there will be an acoustic concert entitled “The Music of Diego Blanco’s Floating Women” and on 3 December you can learn “Diego Blanco’s Photo Secrets”. 

Encore!
 Everyone has been well and truly buffeted in the last twenty years, but there have also been some whom the waves have carried only upwards. “Leningrad”, a group which originated in a centrifuge of criminal gangs, at first skimmed over the history of Russia, then decided what it was to be and finally started building it. In those twenty years the group has amassed an improbable number of hits and has gone beyond the limits of genres. “Leningrad” was the first group to prove that there was no shame in appealing to people — it was a real happiness. At the end of their “20 Years of Joy!” the musicians will share this happiness with the audience at the Ice Palace on 23 and 24 November, performing their anniversary programme as an encore. 

Chamber Music in the Great Hall
The 8th “Silver Lyre” International Chamber Music Festival opens on 28 October in the Philharmonic Great Hall with a concert by the “Sinfonietta of St. Petersburg” and four soloists: Alexey Lyudevig, Ilya Ioff, Pyotr Laul and Alexey Massarsky. The programme will include instrumental concertos by Schumann, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Boccherini and Schnittke. The closing concert of the festival will take place in the same venue and will feature the currently popular Byelorussian soprano Nadezhda Kucher, accompanied by the St. Petersburg pianist Dmitry Pavly. She will sing arias from operas by Donizetti, Charpentier, Gounod, Delibes and Massenet. The other eight concerts will take place in the Philharmonic Chamber Hall and will provide the opportunity to hear some of the stars of chamber music

Young Talents
The 11th Elena Obraztsova International Competition for Young Opera Singers will be held in the Philharmonia from 10 to 17 September. Over 1,200 young performers from thirty countries have taken part in the competition since it was first held. The winners and runners-up include singers who now represent the fame of Russian and international opera — Yulia Lezhneva, Ildar Abdrazakov, Lyubov Petrova, Dinara Alieva... This year’s competition will be the most representative ever: more than 260 young opera singers from 21 countries will be taking part
