Focus On Empowering Mobility Through Safety, Intelligence, Alternate Fuels
Auto Tech Review|February 2019

The 16th edition of the Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT) was organised by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in association with SAE International, SAE INDIA and National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) in Pune from 16-18 January, 2019. In its 34-year-history, this was the first time that the event was organised outside the ARAI facility – at the Oxford Golf Resort, Hill Top, Pune – for want of more space.

Focus On Empowering Mobility Through Safety, Intelligence, Alternate Fuels

In sync with broad global megatrends of the mobility sector, the Government of India is looking to support public transportation, shared and electric mobility – including small vehicles such as two-wheelers – in the second stage of the FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles) policy for a five-year period starting April 2019. This will entail investments of about 5,500 cr that will provide subsidies for all types of EVs, including two-, three and four-wheelers.

This was announced by Dr Asha Ram Sihag, Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Govt of India while addressing the inaugural session at SIAT 2019. The investment is currently under discussion with the Ministry of Finance, but he expects FAME II to kick-off right after FAME I is phased out by the end of March 2019. It may be recalled that the government had sanctioned a corpus of 795 cr under FAME I and had later added another 100 cr.

Recently, the government also sanctioned setting up of 300 EV charging stations that are scheduled to come up in select highways and cities, including the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur and Mumbai-Pune highways. The government has been running 225 EV charging stations in different cities across India as pilot projects, Dr Sihag revealed. This is being done at a capital investment of 35 cr. In addition, Dr Sihag confirmed that homologation facilities for EVs at ARAI, Pune; GARC, Chennai and ICAT, Manesar as well as the new battery testing facility at NATRAX, Indore will be functional in CY2019.

He also highlighted a national policy direction for the automotive sector – termed “3-12-65” – become the third largest automotive market globally, contribute 12 % of the GDP, and generate 65 mn jobs. Calling upon institutions such as ARAI to engage with the private sector for R&D projects in new areas, Dr Sihag said the government is willing to fund such projects.

Sound Generation For Enhanced Road Safety

With an ever-increasing number of fully electric and hybrid vehicles entering the market, we are witnessing a change in the acoustic experience in and around the car. The silent nature of the electric powertrain means that other road users miss the familiar acoustic cues that warn them of an approaching vehicle. To remedy this situation, Harman is working on various noise management solutions.

OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SAFETY CONTRIBUTION OF TODAY'S AUTOMOTIVE HEADLAMPS

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versitÀt Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.

FUNCTIONAL SAFETY STANDARDS TOP PRIORITY FOR FUTURE AUTOMOTIVE DEPLOYMENT

Increasing levels of electronic content in vehicles result in a large amount of software that is required to run the scenes behind the mechanical aspects of a vehicle. Electronic systems in automobiles are part of every section, from the powertrain to comfort and convenience systems as well as all types of safety equipment. This makes electronics and the software running these systems a critical part of the equation for future mobility solutions. In addition, putting standards in place to measure methods of developing, testing and functioning of such electronic systems also becomes highly relevant.
