It’s been more than a decade since Cirrus Aircraft announced its intentions to build a single-engine very light jet.

Since the project was announced, there have been much hype and skepticism about whether the Duluth, Minnesota-based company, known for its technologically advanced piston SR20 and SR22 models, would be able to pull it off. But before the start of the year, Cirrus had the FAA type certificate for the SF50 Vision Jet in hand and delivered the first airplane to a loyal customer — Joe Whisenhunt — who owned 10 piston Cirrus airplanes before becoming a jet owner. The delivery took place at the Cirrus factory in Duluth only weeks before the grand opening of the Vision Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.
