The Importance of Efficient Brakes on a Motorcycle Cannot Be Over-estimated.
How often do you have your brake fluid changed? If you answered, “huh?” you really need to read on. Now if you regularly take your bike to an authorised Harley-Davidson dealership this should be taken care of as part of the routine servicing. But maybe you don’t. Or perhaps you’ve bought a grey market bike without complete service records.
In recent years the Motor Company has used either DOT 4 or DOT 5 specified brake fluid. Harley-Davidsons with brake systems filled with DOT 4 brake fluid need to have it changed every two years.
This is because DOT 4 brake fluid is glycol-based and is hygroscopic, a big word meaning that it can absorb water. Now water boils at 212°F, or less than half the temperature of brake fluid, and this means that any water in the brake fluid dramatically reduces the boiling point of the brake fluid. So what, you may say?
