Jaguar Land Rover reportedly has an ambitious plan to hit a million sales by 2020. Anna Gallagher could be the company’s new secret weapon to achieve it

YOU WON’T find the number written in any official company document. It’s not in any press release. And any question referencing it, posed by some pushy journalist to Jaguar Land Rover boss, Dr Ralf Speth, will be greeted by a shrug of the shoulders and a shake of that salt-and-pepper-coiffed head.

But the word on the street is that Speth has a bold, ambitious plan for Jaguar Land Rover to be flogging a million cars a year come 2020. That is a huge jump considering that last year’s global tally was just 585,313 cars.

Maybe ‘just’ is the wrong word here, because that 583,313 figure represented an all-time sales record for the company, an impressive 20 percent increase over 2015, and a tripling of the number JLR was selling just eight years ago, in 2009.

Whether JLR hits that ambitious target by 2020 will depend on a multitude of factors, not least the global economy, Brexit, the Trump Factor and the strength of the market in China.

Rolling road

A SNOWY February morning is not the ideal time to be taking out a pristine Jaguar E-type, and an early Series 1, flat-floor model at that. But my mate Bryan Smart has booked his in for a three hour session on a rolling road, and doesn’t want to miss the appointment. He’s not looking for more power – this car is standard, but it doesn’t idle as smoothly as it should. He’s not bad with spanners himself, but neither he nor a couple of specialists have been able to solve the issue.
