Big Mac

Kawasaki’s flagship adventure tourer may not be big on power but offers a lot more than its adversaries at an affordable price. Isn’t that precisely the stuff Indians crave for?

IF I WAS ASKED TO CHOOSE ONE entry-level ADV for my own garage, I’d pick the X-Versys 300. It’s brilliant on road, is capable of tackling the trails, has enough space for a pillion, and can go wherever you want (and quickly too). The same applies to the Versys 650. And the 650’s superb pricing is yet another ace up its sleeve. However, there’s an all-new flagship now; the big’ un, a full-blown 1043cc Versys that aims to keep the luxury touring aficionados happy. And continuing with the 650’s tradition, the Versys 1000 doesn’t cost a bomb. So should you pick it up over the sporty Multistrada 950 or the mental S 1000 XR?

Looks matter

The previous generation Versys 1000 looked so similar to the 650 that it failed to grab eyeballs. The latest one, though, picks up elements from the H2 SX and even the Ninja 1000. However, the resulting amalgamation may not please many. The Versys 1000 definitely looks more striking than its predecessor, but that’s mainly due to its size and not aesthetics. It’s oddly designed, with a bulbous front end, a slim midsection, and a derriere that’s way too big for its own good. Its 255kg heft is borne by tiny 17-inch wheels, shod with Bridgestone Battlax Sport Touring T31Rs which makes the overall package even more confusing to look at.
