SUP International|Summer 2018

After working with Scottish gin brand Daffy’s as our drinks partner at the Dragon World Championships in 2017, I am truly a converted gin lover! So, when an invite came to visit their distillery in the highlands, for a day of SUP based botanical foraging, followed by gin making, I jumped at the chance. After a hectic week in the office, I flew north ready for a weekend of Scottish SUPing + gin sipping.

Our host for the weekend and genius behind the Daffy’s Gin brand was Chris Molyneaux, an ex-professional snow-boarder whose aim has always been to create the world’s finest London Dry Gin. Chris would also be expertly supported by his family throughout the weekend, including the resident dog Salty – who we were assured would be joining us for the paddle the next day. After a tour of the grounds we were shown the grand dining room where a Scottish feast was waiting. As the night drew in, with our stomachs full to the brim and a day full of adventure planned for the following morning, we decided to call it a night before the Gin took full control!

Waking up to the sunlight creeping in and the sound of cockerels in the distance was a welcome relief from the usual (now despised) buzzing phone alarm of my usual morning routine. Tentatively, I peered out the window, expecting grey clouds, fortunately Mother Nature was on our side and the ‘typical Scottish Weather’ I’d been so warned about and prepared for had given way to clear blue skies. After a quick breakfast, the team eagerly loaded up and took to the road. What Google maps originally said was going to be a 40-minute drive turned into a speedy 10 minutes, thanks to Chris’s local knowledge of a dirt-track shortcut – though we did manage to lose our photographer Ed on route – as his VW polo, also known as Herbie, was never going to keep pace with our Landrover with a driver that was well rehearsed at battling the winding highland track. Five minutes later, photographer found, boards pumped, we were ready to take to the water at Spey Dam.

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it.
