Return To Glory
SUP International|Summer 2018

We had a date with Puerto Rico. An island known to produce world-class spots and the biggest waves in the Caribbean. Several unknowns await us though: what state would we would find the island in after the hurricane? Will the locals accept us with sups? Was Captain American born on the island? And was the Pina Colada really invented in Puerto Rico?

Return To Glory

I imagined Puerto Rico as a corner of paradise that has recently expe-rienced hell. Maria and Irma, these two soft names do not reflect the violence of the synonymous hurricanes that ravaged the Caribbean last autumn, leaving behind terror, chaos and destruction. Puerto Rico did not escape and so I wondered whether it was sensible to go there, less than 6 months after these tragic events.

I have always believed in the ability of nature and humans to recover. I told myself that going to the island was a way to participate in a return to normal. And so my mind was made up to go to the “Caribbean Hawai’i”, so called for its vaulting bathymetry which interrupts the deep Atlantic swells. With Raf Filippi and Manu Morel as trip companions, I knew I had little chance of getting bored. And then there was the legend of the Pina Colada’s origin on the island, were we not obliged research this claim with utmost expedience?

Paddle Science #18 - The Body Fortress. Boosting Immunity

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. However, if you’ve been anywhere at all in the world recently, then there’s one word you can’t escape at the moment: Coronavirus. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it. It’s only through being infected by a virus that our bodies are able to make the right antibodies to not only enable us to recover but to also help protect us from any recurrent and future infection from it. If you’re keen to stay well and keep getting out on your SUP board this spring, then focussing on boosting your immune system is a positive step to take.

We were on the outskirts of Helsinki, scouting a new destination for our sup camps. Just 45 minutes’ drive from the city, the untouched nature of the Nuuksio National Park stretched out before us.
