The success stories in the special issue simply tell us why we need to go beyond drafting policies that fight gender bias.
FOR SOME, EVERY DAY IS WOMEN’S DAY. There is simply no getting away from the tasks allocated to women is their justification. Many executives and company heads featured in the BW Businessworld Women’s Special Issue have gone through their share of struggle and gender discrimination issues. They have juggled a lot of balls in the air in order to create an identity in the corporate world.
It is easy to share statistics about the growing number of women in workforce, and even talk about the government’s special focus on creating a better environment for women. For example, this Women’s Day, the BJP reeled off statistics to drive home the point how the Modi government was, in fact, a woman-friendly regime. It said, under the Ujjawala scheme, 3.5 crore families were leading smoke-free lives. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, 6 crore toilets had been built. Under the safe motherhood scheme, as many as 1 crore expectant mothers had got benefitted. Increased paid maternity leave had helped 16 lakh women. Universal scheme for adolescent girls had benefitted 40 lakh girls. The National Nutrition Mission was active in 315 districts while the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign was running in 640 districts.
