Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum) is a popular ornamental grass native to North Africa. Owing to its attractive inflorescences (groups of flowers), it is often grown in South African gardens, and has also been used for sand binding.
The grass forms perennial tussocks 60cm to 100cm high, and from November to July these bear cylindrical inflorescences. These can be light pink or purple, and up to 25cm long. Each inflorescence has long bristles, which eventually detach from the plant with the spikelets. Only the inner bristles are feathery. The leaves are up to 40cm long and 3mm wide.
Fountain grass has become invasive over the years and is a declared invader throughout South Africa, which means it must be eradicated where possible.
