Public transport plays a crucially important role in social welfare and accelerating inclusive growth. Public transport sparks a chain reaction in economic activities up to four-five times of initial investments. This also plays a crucial role in protecting the environment. The biggest challenge with the majority of public transport in India is efficiency and quality of service. Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has taken a number of initiatives to improve efficiency and quality of service.
GSRTC is the first in the country to introduce GPS / PIS based Bus Tracking & Passenger Information System for monitoring of buses. In-house bus body fabrication facilities ensure quality and timely delivery of the required buses. Innovative steps have been taken to allow group booking, especially for marriage.
Gujarat state government-owned GSRTC, which was set up on 1 May 1960, provide bus services both within Gujarat and neighbouring states. The Corporation runs a fleet of over 8,200 buses from 125 depots and 226 bus stations. The Corporation's activities are arranged in 16 divisions and it employs over 40,000 people. Out of the total 18,676 villages of Gujarat, GSRTC services cover 18,551 villages, or 99.60 per cent of the villages of the state. GSRTC also ply its buses in neighbouring states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.
