Autonomy Of Academic Institution
The Observer of Management Education
|February 2018
In recent times, there have been lots of talks and debates about autonomy of institutions and universities.
This topic of autonomy has always come to the frame, whenever there is an alleged dispute between a government and local institutions. So let’s discuss what autonomy of academic institution really means and what are its advantages and disadvantages
In general terms, autonomy means the ability of an institution to take all the decisions regarding its function and responsibilities, without the interference of the government, but according to the laws and regulations of a country. Therefore, in academic terms, autonomy of an institution means that the educational bodies can take all the decisions regarding its syllabus, curriculum, salary to employees, admission procedures, pension, insurance and many more, without any interference of the government. However, these decisions should not go against the laws of a nation.
Thus, if we go by the definition of an autonomous body, an autonomous academic institution will fully enjoy the power of freedom and liberty. However, in realistic ground, total autonomy of college, universities or any other institution can only be in theoretical terms. It has so far been never practised in reality, as some sorts of government interference have always been in these institutions.
