The Indian menswear designer talks to HELLO! on the art of fashioning a business out of design, his stellar roster of celebrity clients and the road ahead…
What inspires you today?
“Ideating visually is naturally enhanced by travel. My recent travels to Italy have enabled me to observe the many qualities that define Italian style… perhaps the most interesting being ‘sprezzura’ – it means nonchalance. It is the way in which clothes are worn, a mood of easy elegance.”
Tell us about your latest collection…
“This season at Troy Costa, we celebrate stripes that pronounce symmetry and cast a trendy character. We cater to a man who owns his sensual demeanor and is irresistibly suave.”
In your personal opinion, what are the individual roles played by both couture and prêt in India?
“Couture culture is here to stay as the lure of glamour is omnipresent. India holds its own when it comes to couture because of its artisanal legacy, rich craft and deep sense of history. Indian Couture is bridal-based and customised to a person’s individual style, its major customers being the elite. Fashion designers, much like myself, are keenly tapping the urban middle class and their increasing spends by introducing pocket-friendly prêt lines.”
What is the most important lesson you’ve learnt on the journey so far as a designer-cum-entrepreneur?
