As a student of Economics at the University of Delhi’s prestigious Hindu College, Harpreet Narula dreamt of making a mark in a creative field. Films — ranging from Bollywood and Hollywood to world cinema — were his foremost passion and he was keen to pursue the line of filmmaking. However, Rimple, his partner in life and work, was aware of his talent in design and encouraged him to follow this path. Simultaneously, she took on the managerial responsibilities that would help their brand, Rimple and Harpreet Narula, grow into the behemoth it is today.
Harpreet recalls the story of how it all began, “We lived in Ludhiana, Punjab in the late 1990s. When my brother was getting married, we had no culture of designers there. I decided to design the clothes for my brother and my family because I knew I could do it well. Those clothes were so appreciated that I started designing on a larger scale just catering to the needs of my own family and friends circle.”
The year 2000 proved a big one for them, with the birth of their son Ishraj as well as their clothing label, which now has multiple stores around India — the latest being their Kala Ghoda outpost in Mumbai. Describing their brand aesthetic, Rimple says, “It is a paradox of rural craft and high-end design. We do everything intuitively — from the process of designing to the use of colour and fabric.”
TIMELESS ELEGANCE
One also sees this painstaking attention to detail in their beautiful South Delhi farmhouse, a labour of love that took years to complete. Upon entering the stately home, one is first greeted by The Kiss, a contemporary sculpture of two lip-locked figures by Himmat Shah. It rests upon an intricately carved camelbone inlay table exuding old-world charm. This juxtaposition of the traditional and the contemporary defines the aesthetic of this home.
