The three countries intersect in an area of the biosphere called the Montecristo Mastiff (a massif is a compact group of mountains). It is home to one of Central America’s largest cloud forests. Cloud forests are mountainous regions where rainfall is heavy. Trees in cloud forests are often short, but here they grow to heights of up to 98 feet (30 meters). They form a dense canopy that prevents the sun from reaching the forest floor. Mushrooms, mosses, climbing ferns, lichens (a type of fungi), and orchids thrive in this dark environment. The forest is also filled with a wide variety of animals, including anteaters, pumas, and spider monkeys. The colorful toucan is just one of the almost 100 bird species that can be found here. More than 45 globally threatened species live within the Trifinio Fraternidad Biosphere Reserve.
