We’re celebrating a century of the recipes and memories that made its stand mixer a kitchen icon.
For many, KitchenAid’s mixer is more than a handy tool. It’s the grandkids’ favorite Christmas cookies. It’s Aunt Alma’s famous banana cake. It’s hand-rolled pasta on a Sunday afternoon. Every recipe made with the help of this machine is a homemade memory—and part of a rich history spanning 100 years.
DID YOU KNOW?
At its debut in 1919, the Model H-5, KitchenAid’s first domestic-use stand mixer, weighed an imposing 65 pounds and stood 26 inches tall.
The mixer’s design has been pretty much the same since 1937. In fact, if you own a model made anytime since, it will work with all attachments, old and new.
Since 1941, every KitchenAid stand mixer has been built in Greenville, Ohio. KitchenAid fanatics can visit the town for a factory tour, or shop at the KitchenAid Experience retail center, which houses a complete collection of KitchenAid products and a museum devoted to the history of the brand.
MIXING IT UP WITH LONNIE HARTSTACK
My 12-year-old granddaughter, Sydney, has enjoyed cooking since she was old enough to stand on a chair at the counter. She’d been telling me she wanted a KitchenAid for a long time, and her parents finally got her a black one for Christmas. She’s very protective of it—she keeps it spotless and doesn’t let anyone else use it!
One afternoon we made ravioli, and I helped Sydney run the pasta dough through her mixer. She did the rest, then started making strawberry lemon cupcakes. I felt as if I was watching a junior chef on TV. My husband doesn’t even like cupcakes, but he can’t wait for Sydney to visit this summer to make him more!
