While kitchen trends may come and go – good design never goes out of fashion, so follow these basic tips to top kitchen design and even if you get bored of the  colour, it will still work, writes CAROL BURNS

WHAT SIZE ARE YOU?

Kitchens do a lot of the work and as such no space should be wasted. Designers all agree that the workhorses of the room, the sink, the cooker or hob and a preparation area, should be laid out in a work triangle to reduce travel. Ideally this area should also be clear of people passing through the kitchen. Sometimes this basic design may require relocating water, electricity and waste pipes – but it will be worth the effort.

LOVE ISLAND

Kitchen islands have become a mainstay to kitchen design and are one of our favourite features. Consider its possible uses: an ideal hidey hole for dishwashers and washing machines, extra storage, a space for prep and a social space where the cook can face his or her guests. It’s also the perfect natural barrier to separate the kitchen from the dining area.

EASY ACCESS

No matter how big your kitchen island is, you will need extra prep space by your cooker and sink. Front loading appliances will need plenty of space in front of them and when choosing built-in appliances you can fit at a convenient eye height. When it comes to storage, consider what you keep where, for example keep pots and pans near the cooker.
