Learning Meets Fun At The Lost World Of Tambun

The educational trip to The Lost World of Tambun, Perak took the 2017 BBC Earth Magazine School Challenge first runners-up on an unexpected adventure that combines outdoor fun with learning experiences. During the trip, the students picked up teamwork and leadership skills while exploring a cave and gained new knowledge about one of the pioneering cities of the Peninsular of Malaysia as the visited a foodie street modelled after the old streets of Ipoh. Join the students from SMK Victoria Institution as they explored the myriad of attractions at The Lost World of Tambun!

CHAI CHUN LIK

One of the more memorable highlights from the trip was exploring the 6th Mile Tunnel. I can still recall how we swam across an ice-cold river early in the morning on our way to the cave and were instantly jolted awake. We were fully decked up in caving gear with hard helmets and torches. What a refreshing start to the day! Inside the cave, I was so fascinated by the natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The different structures and shapes serve as a testament to just how beautiful formations designed by nature can be.

Another unforgettable thing about the trip was the wonderful spread of local delicacies from Ipoh. We indulged in a variety of local dishes including the famous Ipoh Hor Fun and Tau Fu Fa. To top that, we were also very fortunate to have had the chance to try traditional dishes that were historically a staple for tin miners in the region. The most interesting of these was definitely the dry bread crumbs served with coconut and sugar.
