Ujjayi Pranayama

The word “Ujjayi Pranayama” comes from the Sanskrit word Ujjayi, meaning “Victory”. Thus the Ujjayi breath means “victorious breath”.

In this pranayam, the process of Inhalation and exhalation are both done through the nostrils with an “ocean like sound” created as air passes in and out. As the throat passage is narrowed thus too is that the airway, the passage of air through that creates a rushing sound. When you constrict the back of your throat to make the ocean sound, it’s the Epiglottis and your vocal cords that you’re consciously constricting narrowing your airway.
