Katy Katopodis, 41, talks to Leigh Hermon about breaking news, her Twitter addiction, and how she unwinds after a hard day in the office.
Radio journalist Katy Katopodis’ two decades’ long career in news started when she landed her first job as an overnight news anchor at Primedia in 1996. A year later she joined the Talk Radio 702 team and worked her wayup to become the youngest editor-in-chief of Eyewitness News (EWN) in 2001. On top of running a home and one of SA’s most credible newsrooms, she’s also a writer and she released her first book I’m Missing News (Pan Macmillan) in 2013. She lives in Bedfordview with her husband, restaurateur Kosta Kosmas, and their two sons, Alexandros Kosmas, 11, and Panos Kosmas, seven.
News doesn’t keep regular hours, so neither do I. I have on occassion arrived at home in the evening, only to have to head back to the office an hour or two later when a story breaks. That’s exactly what happened with the recent cabinet reshuffle. Even though my sons are both quite young, they’re aware of the dynamics of my job; I once heard Panos explain my leaving the house late at night to Alexandros by saying, ‘Mommy’s got some breaking news.’ Now, when the kids tell me about their day, they’ll often start by saying, ‘Do you want to hear some breaking news about what happened at school today?’
