Travelling with a toddler can be nerve-racking. They scream, act out, throw up or behave like little devils. Does this mean that you should put on hold all travel with baby until they are older? ANDANJE WOBANDA thinks not and shares tips on managing trip with baby.
December is the season for annual holiday trips for most families. It’s the time we flock to the beach for some much-needed sun and sand, to the countryside to visit relatives or overseas in search of new experiences. Throw in the toddlers and the biggest worry is how you will arrive in one piece!
Here are some pointers on how to make the trip bearable:
1 ALWAYS PLAN AHEAD
Get your ticket and accommodations sorted days if not weeks in advance. To avoid ‘mommy brain’ episodes, have a to-do list and tick it off to ensure you don’t miss anything and you’re on time. Besides, getting tickets in advance will not only get you the cheapest rates, it will ensure you get seats close together. Just remember there is nothing like being ‘over prepared’ when it comes to travelling with kids.
2 CHECK IN EARLY
Try not to be those parents who arrive late, frantically running all over the place with their kids in tow to check in, or hack a last-minute shopping stop at duty-free. Checking in early ensures that you have ample time to kick back with a glass of wine or juice while you watch the kids run off some energy. Remember the kids can pick up on your mood - whether you are stressed or relaxed. So relax.
3 THINK GAME TIME
When travelling with kids, you have to master the art of distraction. Nothing distracts better than games. Keep it simple and don’t be tempted to carry all their toys. Think one lego pack, some crayons and a colouring book. You can always buy themed playing cards that are in season along the way.
