This little book appears here thanks to the chap who pointed it out to me on the second-hand bookstall at the West London Aero Club's Members Day, and it came with the ‘three for a tenner’ bargain cache that included L J K Setright’s The Power to Fly, (see ‘Books & Gear’, November 2019). Dive Bomber was “one of the classics,” he said “and the author wrote a sequel that’s also worth reading” (Fighting Squadron).
All I can say is thank you so much for the tip, sir: Dive Bomber shines a light on a world of 1930s US naval aviation that I thought I knew a little about and now realize I was almost entirely ignorant of. Highly informative, it is also engaging and well written and contains some of the most enthralling descriptions of flying I have read.

Make mine a turbine!
To say aviation and turbines is a happy marriage is true−albeit mainly in the airline, business aircraft and helicopter world. Light aviation, especially the ultralight segment, remains essentially a turbine free field−apart from noble exceptions, in the form of single-engine jets and ‘experimentals’.
