Old age is perceived as a distant event, but sooner or later, reality will hit. We age because we are designed to die. Our genetic makeup has an inbuilt biological clock that only runs for a particular distance, but this length can be shortened or enhanced by the environment. As the young-old balance shifts, a country’s administration and functioning responsibilities come to rest more upon these ripened shoulders. With such an obligation, the old cannot be frail anymore!
Singapore is already feeling the impact of a rapidly ageing population. Currently, one in 12 residents are 65 years and above. By 2030, every fifth resident will be over 65 years. Unless the middle-aged adults gear up for a fitter life, this could become an obstacle to growth.
