VERSATILE TORCH
It's often called a kitchen torch-think creme brulee-but that's just scratching the surface of its uses. The Bernzomatic Maker Precision Torch comes with an attachment that has a fine soldering tip. Remove the attachment's soldering tip, and it becomes a micro heat gun, which works great on heat shrink tubing for wiring repair.
Using the regular flame tip, I can solder copper pipe and make solder repairs on brass and woodwind instruments. My Precision Torch also goes camping with me—it's a handy fire starter. The torch has an adjustable flame and the butane is refillable. You'll find the Bernzomatic Maker Precision Torch Kit (about $30) at home centers, hardware stores and online.

ALL-AROUND YARD TOOL
Smaller than trees yet stronger than weeds, the flora surrounding the pond in my suburban backyard is my nemesis. A few times a year, I need to show it who's boss. No, I'm not the boss. My Fiskars 13-in. Billhook rules the backyard.
The Billhook's hooked blade works like an ax to slice off growth at ground level. It is also able to cut through small branches in multiples so I can neatly pile the trimmings. The serrated edge opposite the hook lets me saw through dense weeds and beefy branches. And the small tip end is handy for splitting perennials.
The tool's handle seems custom-made; I have a sure grip when I'm swinging at the weeds and heavy growth. A nylon sheath wraps the tool securely when I'm finished. You can find the Fiskars Billhook for about $35 at home centers and hardware stores.

9 ALTERNATIVE USES FOR SAWDUST
Every fully stocked wood shop has a table saw. You can usually find a pile of sawdust under it, even if it's used only occasionally. If a shop has a belt sander or band saw, there's probably another pile of finer sawdust under that. Even people without stationary tools have sawdust accumulation on their workbenches.
