1 A NATION IN BLOOM
The Chelsea Flower Show is undoubtedly the Royal Horticultural Society’s best-loved annual event, but Britain’s largest gardening charity does much more than that, as a browse through this enlightening book reveals. It highlights RHS initiatives such as promoting horticulture as a career and demonstrating just how restorative gardening and outdoor engagement can be. The lush imagery, meanwhile, celebrates the importance of cultivating our own dear green space, and shows off the beauty to be found in gardens big and small. £30, White Lion Publishing
2 KIFTSGATE COURT GARDENS
Britain is spoilt for choice when it comes to significant gardens but this one, at Gloucestershire’s beautiful Kisgate Court, is particularly special since it has been tended by three generations of the same family. Heather Muir laid the foundations of her masterpiece in 1919, passing it on to her daughter Diany Binny in 1954. Since the late 1980s, Heather’s granddaughter Anne Chambers has been at the helm. Kisgate’s centenary this summer is celebrated in this timely book, which takes an affectionate look at one of the country’s most important gardens, rich in history, creativity and beauty. £40, Merrell

You might think the process is purely creative, but designing knitted textiles requires a deep understanding of geometry and pattern calculations. It is intricate and often mathematical. I have learned that knitting demands a constant balance between artistry and engineering. Creating a new textile involves not only selecting colours and yarns but also considering the tensile strength, elasticity and drape of the material. That way, I ensure the final product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. To me, this blend of creativity and technical precision is a fascinating aspect of knitted textile design.
