Tribal Women and the Uniform Civil Code

Customary laws in Arunachal Pradesh like in other states of the Northeast have been acting as a shield for patriarchy. Does that mean that the women of the State are ready for the UCC?

Customary Laws in Arunachal

Arunachal Pradesh, like the other Northeastern states, has been following tribal laws since its inception but the fact is that customary laws have been acting as a shield for patriarchy. The recent verdict in Mizoram which upholds the possibility of Mizo Hnam Dan or Mizo customary law being codified is a welcome move, and should be emulated by its neighbouring states. There are problems galore with our customary laws but rather than accepting the UCC, most tribal women press for reformation of existing customary laws.
