On Holiday With Pearl
Good Housekeeping South Africa|November - December 2019
Actress and all-round superstar Pearl Thusi – a.k.a. Mama Panther - and her daughters, Thando and Okuhle, show off the perfect summer-holiday wardrobe, ideal for adventuring comfortably and stylishly. Happy holidays, everyone!
On Holiday With Pearl

Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Pearl first explored her passion for the entertainment industry when she was in high school through modelling and pageants in her community of KwaNdengezi and at Pinetown Girls’ High School. She won the Miss KwaZulu-Natal pageant and was first runner-up in the Miss SA Teen pageant before entering the broadcast world with TV and radio jobs when she moved to Johannesburg. Her amazing career trajectory and work ethic haven’t slowed down since.

You’ll know Pearl from her roles in major productions such as Isidingo, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Catching Feelings, Quantico and Kalushi: The Story Of Solomon Mahlangu. Pearl will be making history in January when she stars in Netflix’s first original African series, Queen Sono.

MEET THE FAMILY

Pearl’s two beautiful daughters, Thando, 12, and four-year-old Okuhle (Pearl is her guardian), are at the centre of her universe. On any given weekend, you’re likely to find the three of them – plus their three dogs! – enjoying an outdoor adventure, something Pearl remembers fondly from her own childhood. ‘I always make sure we have outdoor activities planned so that the girls are active,’ she says.

Pearl credits her bond with Thando for much of her own personal growth and learning. ‘Children are our mirrors; they mirror our behaviour. Sometimes when I try to correct or fix her behaviour, I recognise that I do the same thing, and she’s just showing me who I am. It challenges me to be a better person and do better things so she can reflect the same behaviour back to me,’ says Pearl.
