Kelly’s beloved donkeys are the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae…
The four-legged members of Mike’s Donkeys lead far from dull lives. The website lists their proudest moments… for Taffy, climbing the stands at a rugby ground when Mike left him unsupervised for five minutes; for Paddy, getting a bucket stuck on his head; for Andy, weeing in Mike’s boots; and when Cyo first arrived, he managed three speedy laps of a car park before being caught!
“They keep us on our toes,” laughs Kelly Baker, a partner in the business that began on a beach in south Wales 15 years ago. “Danny enjoyed himself so much on a job in central London that he wouldn’t go back in the lorry. I was desperately trying to get him in, all to the amusement of tourists taking photos. Cecil the stallion once managed to get into a neighbouring field – the thoroughbred mare there had a mule the next year!
“Donkeys are really intelligent and know exactly what they want and how to get it. If there’s a fence rail loose in the field they’ll be off on an adventure!”
