You name it, Dwayne Harris knows it.
He knows the receiver position, inside and out. He knows the running back position, even though that is technically not part of his job description. And he knows even more than that.
“I even know a little bit of the quarterback stuff,” Harris said. “I know a little bit of everything. Knowing that helps me out so much more on the field.”
Few can help out as much on the field as Harris, signed last year to become the face of the Giants special teams units. It proved to be a smart, under-the radar move, even though it did not work out exactly as the Giants, or Harris, envisioned.
Harris was brought in for the 2015 season to upgrade every aspect of special teams, not only the glittery and exciting moments with the ball in his hands on kickoff and punt returns. The Giants were equally intrigued by his ability to do the dirty work as a gunner, sprinting down the field while fighting off double-team blocks to put the opposing return man in harm’s way.
A problem arose and the Giants never quite were able to utilize Harris the way they planned. He was needed, frequently, as the third receiver, lining up far more often on offense than the original plan called for. Something had to give and for Harris, that something was the frequency he was used in coverage.
