LET'S TREAT FURNITURE LIKE PEOPLE, AS IF ITS ALIVE

WHEN I’M climbing a mountain, there is a rhythm that I follow. Each step counts a beat and it’s usually a cycle of four. As I ascend higher, the rhythm moves from a longer cycle to a much shorter one, and eventually each step is its own cycle. Effectively, it is to take one step at a time. The difference between knowing this and experiencing it has transformed the way I approach things. A mountain is a difficult thing to climb, but we can all take that one step. What changed for me is the shift from a spatial aspect to a temporal one. The mountain is no longer a geography alone, it is also a coordinate in time.

When I started Baro Design, after closing Baro a few months ago, I searched for the ‘why’ I was doing what I was doing? Through many iterations and peeled layers, what distilled was the desire to be present in the moment to have a fuller life, and apply that to my work. As a designer, how could I use design to incorporate the aspect of living in the now, to what is largely a world dominated by the space we occupy.
