DARSHAN WITHOUT MOORTI
It must be in 1991 or so, I was visiting Bhubaneswar for the first time at the behest of Prof. Bidhu Bhushan Das, a very well-known educationist and also a great person. He wanted me to do Ph.D. under him and so to register my name in the University, I had gone to Bhubaneswar. After the registration was over, he asked me whether I had been to Bhubaneswar before. I replied, ‘No’. He immediately booked for me in the tourism bus, where a guided tour was organized. The guide was good and was giving very graphic description of the places.
As we neared Konark, he gave the details – ‘This temple when at its glory, was one of the most majestic temple. The Moorti of Bhagwan Soorya was seen without any support as if really he was riding the sky in his magical chariot.’
‘How was that possible?’ someone asked incredulously.
‘There were powerful magnets below and on the top; so being pulled in both directions the Moorti was in the midair.’
‘Is it not there now?’ asked another pilgrim anxiously.
‘Unfortunately, no. Once, when the ships of the British were passing in the sea, the powerful magnets pulled them to the shore and they got damaged. So the British broke the magnets and carried the Moorti away to London.’
‘So, it means it is no more a temple!’ said another pilgrim.
‘Well….’ the guide Sighed.

When I was Principal in Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya at Kanyakumari, I had made it a point to go to all the classes in a week. I used to take ‘moral science’ classes. Whatever is to be told to children to mould them and develop proper attitude and good habits in them I used to tell through stories. After experimenting with various suggested courses, I came to the conclusion that a story can be the most effective tool. So, I made my plan that in each class a specific great principle of our culture should be communicated through suitable stories.

The room in Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in Sasthamangalam appears small but bears all marks of subtle nobility. There are pictures of the divine trio – Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada, and Swami Vivekananda – on the walls as well as some memorabilia and books on a bed. A frail woman in her mid-eighties sits in a corner chair, her eyes faintly lighting up as she smiles in welcome.

Our search can get a halt when we come across a one hundred twenty one years old ‘Plague Manifesto’ written by the warrior sanyasi Swami Vivekananda during the Bengal Plague in 1898.
