Marvellous Melbourne

Defined as “Southern” in the expressive prose of Latin, Australia is often referred to as the Land Down Under. The fascinating single continent-country lies entirely within the southern hemisphere, hence its unique climate, seeing winters during the middle months of the calendar and summers in the last quarter. It is the largest country in Oceania and the world’s sixth largest country by total area, giving birth to a unique culture and plenty of land for the development of infrastructure.

In the state of Victoria, lies the second largest city and former capital of the country, Melbourne. With a population of almost five million, Australia has the world’s 9th largest immigrant count, with settlers accounting for a quarter of its citizens. Widely regarded as Australia’s ‘Sports Capital’, Melbourne is the venue of the Australian Tennis Open, the chronologically first of the four tennis grand slams, and the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Home to two A-league teams in Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC, the city is bustling with sports fans.

As a nation with immense talent, the land down under has constantly produced world-class athletes, notably golfers. Starting from five-time Open Championship winner in the late 1950s Peter Thomson, to Hall of Famer and all-time great Greg Norman. In the modern era, the meteoric rise of Jason Day and Adam Scott, two former world-number-ones that share 45 wins between them which includes two majors, are taking over the mantle from the Great White Shark.
