Derrius Guice is healthy once more so it’s time for the Redskins to learn what they really have – a potential star or an injury-prone player.

MAKE GUICE THE PRIME RUNNER

Who knows, maybe the 2018 second-rounder is just the unluckiest person with two major injuries over two games. He missed last season after a preseason knee injury. After gaining only 18 yards on carries in the season opener at Philadelphia, Guice missed eight games with a knee injury before returning against the New York Jets.

The Redskins now have a potential prime back with injuries to both knees and no idea whether he can hold up. So, like quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Guice needs to play regularly to show he is part of the 2020 campaign or is just one of those guys who couldn’t stay healthy.

The problem – Adrian Peterson won’t sit on the bench happily. Sure, we understand A.P. is bound for Canton as a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. But that’s as a Minnesota Viking, not a Redskin. This isn’t Riggo where the team owes Peterson a lifelong debt. Peterson came as a mercenary seeking one last chance and has played decently. However, he’s probably not in the 2020 plans at age 35 so he needs to give way to Guice.

Coach Bill Callahan sees the P.R. problem so he’ll split carries between the two. As long as Guice gets 810 carries per game, that’s enough. Peterson will get about as many to placate him, too. The team just needs to get through the next few weeks without a major meltdown over this.
