THE last day of exams in April was a day we children looked forward to with great anticipation. It was akin to being released from a cage into the wilderness. From being unfettered from the books and set free to unleash our minds and bodies.
The pent up energy was released by indulging in simple but efficient activities. The first step was bringing out the old cycle rims and tires. The long sandy paiwat (traditional pathways) became our racing track and our humble wheel a formula one bike or car. The dirt spewed by our feet added to the excitement while loud engine roar and screech of tires were mimicked skillfully by our vocal chords. The chase went back and forth, with the track bare except for the occasional lone walker, who stepped out of the way to avoid collisions. Sweaty and coated with grime, we rushed home to refuel… water, canji, mangoes, lime water …whatever!
In the blazing afternoon sun we found a place under a sheltered canopy and played a game of tossing cashew nuts called koiba. Each one of us raided the kitchen for a handful of cashew nuts and after playing with friends returned home either with double the nuts or with empty pockets… as one was either rewarded or penalized for the right or wrong moves in the game.
After lunch, we would sit under some shady tree discussing exam corrections, the teachers, results and fears of being detained or promoted. Then back to our wheels, racing and spending the energy till the summons of the distant church bell called us home.
