This out-of-the-way place seemed utterly peaceful. Yet it wasnt always so, as Cindy remembers so well

Peace, Love, Hope...

I can’t believe it was thirty-five years ago.” Cindy scanned the country lane ahead, as her daughter negotiated each blind bend with caution.

“This is the middle of nowhere, Mum.” Tanya steered around a pothole in the road. “Are you sure this is the right way?”

“Half the roads were just tracks back then,” Cindy said. “Anyway, we avoided the main routes – too easy for the police to stop us, try to turn us back.”

That earned her a mildly stunned glance from her daughter.

“I still can’t see you as – what does Dad call you – his subversive anarchist?”

Cindy chuckled. “At the time he just called me Cindy, but with a ridiculously fake American accent, so that it sounded like CND. It was as near to making a joke about it as he could get.”

“Dad’s not known for his sense of humour.” Tanya smiled to herself, then her grin broadened with mischief. “So, was it somewhere around here that you were arrested?”

“No need to sound so astonished, young lady.”

“I’m sorry, Mum.” Tanya was still grinning. “But you’re so kind and caring; I can’t imagine you protesting.”
