The prince of hearts married his true love in a ceremony that blended pageantry with hollywood glamour.
It was a magical mix of time- honoured royal traditions and modern Americaninfluenced moments. The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle showcased their diverse backgrounds as well as their deep love for each other, and it was perfect.
From the stunning setting in a grand chapel in the grounds of the world’s oldest inhabited castle, through to the gospel choir that sang a spine-tingling rendition of chart-topping R&B hit Stand by Me, the extraordinary service blended Harry’s royal heritage with Meghan’s multicultural one.
It was a star-studded occasion, with Hollywood A-listers rubbing shoulders with British nobility. But for all the grand pageantry and unconventional contemporary touches, it was also a moving and intimate ceremony in which two people promised to love and honour each other for the rest of their lives.
US bishop Michael Curry – whose rousing address was a real departure from tradition and a highlight of the service – put it succinctly when he said, “Two young people fell in love and we all showed up.”
By we all, he clearly meant not only the 600 invited guests in St George’s Chapel but the 100,000-plus people who lined the streets of Windsor and the billions of viewers who watched TV coverage and livestreams of the royal wedding.
At times, however, the couple seemed oblivious to the fact that the eyes of the world were upon them as they became husband and wife – they only had eyes for each other. Meghan gazed adoringly at her groom as he lifted the veil from her face, and they held hands for much of the service, with Harry at times tenderly rubbing his thumb over Meghan’s fingers in a comforting gesture.
