Izzy wasn’t about to stand aside and let them accuse her son – not without some pretty convincing evidence

- Hilary Middleton

In Safe Hands

Izzy sat on a secluded bench in the park, sobbing. It was embarrassing, letting her emotions get the better of her in public, but she couldn’t help herself.

She’d been called in to see her son’s teacher before class.

‘Sam’s behaviour is giving cause for concern,’ Mrs Poole had said. ‘He’s been tormenting another child.’

Tormenting? Her blood ran cold. ‘What’s he been doing, exactly?’

‘Not letting Ethan out of the playhouse.’

Ethan was the youngest in the reception class, slightly built and timid.

‘Has Sam been hurting him in any way?’ Izzy asked.

‘Not that I’m aware of. It came to light via another parent whose child told her what was happening. I haven’t spoken to Ethan’s mum yet.’

That figured. Clare was a busy, high-powered, career woman, if her appearance was anything to go by. Smart suits, immaculate hair and make-up… A quick hug for Ethan at the classroom door and she’d be off, busily checking her phone.

‘And what did Sam have to say about it?’

‘Very little,’ Mrs Poole said. ‘He and Ethan seem to have taken a vow of silence.’
