Today’s generation of workers is challenging the old norms of travel and work. Offices have been exchanged for co-working spaces and remote working now allows a fortunate few to travel full-time. Indeed, the growing trend that is the nomad lifestyle has created a new challenge, which some countries are embracing – finding innovative ways to accommodate the remote-working traveller.
I’m one of these young nomads, a full-time motorhomer, exploring Europe and sustaining my travels through writing and photography.
One country in particular that has been fully embraced by younger ‘van-lifers’ is Portugal. It’s easy to understand why – with a sunny climate, stacks of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and wonderful coastal scenery, it’s a fantastic place to explore. The mild winters, especially in the Algarve to the south, and warm and sunny summers make it an all-year destination.
I’ve enjoyed several months travelling around, exploring the country’s spectacular landscapes and one-of-a-kind beaches.
Welcoming digital nomads
Portugal was one of the first places to recognise that an increasing number of people (particularly freelancers and the self-employed) were looking to work remotely overseas, and has made good use of government initiatives to welcome digital nomad entrepreneurs.
Most travellers can remain in Portugal for up to three months and, should you wish to extend your stay, or if you are from outside the EU and would like to work there remotely, you can apply for a Digital Nomad Visa.
As a copywriter and photographer, I have had the pleasure of being able to work and travel in Portugal. For those planning a trip there, it’s good to know some basic rules on how to get about.
