THAT'S ENOUGH FOR TODAY

THERE’S nothing quiet about the workplace buzzword that suddenly seems to be popping up everywhere. It feels as if everyone is talking about quiet quitting and what it may mean.

It’s not a new thing, experts say, but thanks to social media the idea of checking out at work without actually resigning has hit a nerve across the world. And already debates are raging about what it means and whether it’s good or not. We take a closer look.

WHAT IS QUIET QUITTING? It doesn’t mean resigning from your job without giving any notice or telling nobody other than your boss you’re leaving.

With quiet quitting, you don’t leave your job at all. There are several definitions for quiet quitting.

Saying no to extra work “It’s about stopping doing work that people think is beyond what they were hired to do and not getting compensated for,” says Kathy Caprino, a Connecticut-based women’s career and leadership coach and author of The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss.

Rather than working late on a Friday evening, organising the annual team- building trip or volunteering to take on a project, quiet quitters want to avoid burnout and do just what their job description requires them to do, nothing more, nothing less.

In short, it’s a renewed commitment to life beyond the workplace, freeing up time to spend with family and friends or to take care of yourself.

A way to start coasting “My understanding of quiet quitting is when you emotionally and mentally check out of your job and do the bare minimum necessary to not get fired,” says northern California-based career coach Kelsey Wat.
