2024 was a year of nostalgic revival and bold risks for the beauty landscape. Make-up, which in recent times had become passé with the dominance of clean girl beauty, finally got fun and creative again. The vibe for this year was all about heavy blushes, dark ombré lips, bleached eyebrows, gemstones, graphic eyeliners, and bold eyeshadow, reflecting a subdued rejection of the monopoly of clean girl beauty. That's not to say that the Hailey Bieber-esque make-up style is going anywhere any time soon. It had its share of the spotlight, but this time, other pop culture powerhouses like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX played a significant role in shaping some of the biggest make-up trends of the year.
We can all agree that for a make-up trend to remain popular for more than two weeks, let alone a year, is a huge feat in the world of Instagram and TikTok. However, within this, there were some that broke through the fleeting time cycle of microtrends, aesthetics, and cores, and made a lasting impact. It was the sultriness of espresso make-up, the sassiness of brat beauty, the iciness of frosty finishes, the otherworldliness of Y3K aesthetics, the richness of cranberry tones, and the playfulness of colourful hues that made the cut. As 2024 wraps up, we invited beauty content creators Rahil Sayed, Rida Tharana, Krutika (The Mermaid Scales), Deep Pathare, Ankush Bahuguna, and Leisha Patidar to bring their unique flair to these year-defining make-up trends.
